A boot in need of air

Len removed the boot because it had collected enough river water to become a separate habitat. He placed it on the jetty and turned to explain the incident to Mara. His explanation involved a slippery plank, an unexpected wave and no personal responsibility. The pelican arrived before he reached the part about the wave.

An inspection begins

The bird examined the boot from several angles. It nudged the heel, opened its bill and looked disappointed by the lack of fish. Len attempted to reclaim it with the careful politeness usually reserved for borrowing a neighbour’s ladder. The pelican stepped backwards. Mara sat on the tackle box and announced that negotiations appeared to have stalled.

03

The acceptable exchange

A passing boat drew the bird’s attention to a more promising part of the jetty. It left the boot where it stood, apparently having completed its report. Len put it back on and discovered that the inspection had not improved its dryness. Mara’s notebook entry was brief: one boot returned, dignity still missing. Len asked her to add that the pelican had been very large. She gave the bird an extra line.

This river and its characters are imagined. The adventure is fiction, with no fishing or navigation instruction.
