Episode 01 / River days

The pool that kept its own time

Mara arrived with a schedule. The river had prepared something else.

01

A very precise morning

Mara had written three things in her notebook: arrive early, find the old root pool, be home before lunch. She underlined the last instruction because Len had once described half past four as a kind of late lunch. The path was easy enough until a fallen branch sent them along the higher bank. By the time they reached the water, the sun had already made a bright window between the leaves.

02

The shape below the roots

A bass rested in the green shade as if it had been placed there by someone arranging a room. It was larger than Mara expected and much less interested in her arrival. Len sat down on a flat stone. He said nothing about tackle, timing or the notebook. A leaf landed on the surface, travelled three slow circles and disappeared through the roots. Mara watched another leaf do exactly the same thing.

03

A different sort of entry

They stayed until the bright window moved to the other side of the pool. The bass shifted once, showing a pale flank, then became part of the shade again. On the walk home, Mara crossed out the schedule. Under it she wrote: the water turns here even when it looks still. Len asked whether that counted as a successful morning. Mara closed the notebook before answering. For once, the question seemed to have arrived too early.

This river and its characters are imagined. The adventure is fiction, with no fishing or navigation instruction.
